The Bill got the Presidential assent and a Gazette notification was made on 6 September 2016, thus officially converting ISM into Indian Institute of Technology (Indian School of Mines), Dhanbad. On 25 May 2016, the Union Cabinet headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi approved that a bill be introduced in Parliament for converting ISM Dhanbad into an IIT. ISM to IIT refers to the movement started by the students of Indian School of Mines Dhanbad aimed at convincing the Government of India of the need to convert the institution into an Indian Institute of Technology (IIT). On 19 July 2016 the Institutes of Technology (Amendment) Bill, 2016 was introduced into the Lok Sabha. It was passed by the Lok Sabha without opposition on 25 July 2016. The Rajya Sabha unanimously passed the Bill on 2 August 2016. And hence, ISM dhanbad is now officially IIT(ISM) Dhanbad, by the conversion bill passed.
Thus, after the long struggle of students, the bill was passed. This was a moment of celebration for the 2016 batch, as they are now officially IITians despite of earlier tag of ISMites.

Official Institute Declaration / Notice
It is unrealistic to comment on the progress of institute by merely its IIT status. IIT(ISM) Dhanbad has been ranked amongst the best in Earth Science branches all over world, but it lags in other fields. There has been numerous speculations on the facilities offered by the institute and up gradation of institute might suffice the problem faced. But, worry no more!
Now, the decision making body will be IIT Council, which will make favorable suitable decision for the betterment of the institute like it has been doing for the past several years for other IIT’s in India.
The ISM to IIT movement was the result of a simmering discontent with roots dating back to those fateful days back in 1994 when the lamp was first lit, only to be ruthlessly, and unceremoniously, doused. The movement itself had humble, yet hopeful, beginnings in 2009, but thanks to the at times overzealous passion of the ISM junta, snowballed with each passing year. Six years of satisfying hits and excruciating misses later, it became a question of ‘when’ and not ‘if’ after the Honourable Finance Minister, Mr. Arun Jaitley, announced the conversion of ISM to an IIT in his budget speech on 28 February 2015.
This is quoted from Mailer Daemon’s Facebook page informing students prior to conversion bill being passed, entire institute was felicitous by the news. Mailer Daemon is IIT(ISM)’s official media house run by students of the college themselves.
